Office Desk Buyer's Guide

What materials are used for these desks?

Desks come in a variety of materials, each valued for different reasons.  Depending on why you are purchasing a desk, and how you would like it to function, some of the following choices may make more sense to you than others.  The most commonly available desk materials are:

Wood.  Most “traditional” desks are made of some sort of wood.  The finish and detail on the wood vary greatly depending on what you need, but wood is a great choice for quality desks.  However, it does chip, scratch, and mar easily, and will occasionally require re-finishing or touching up, and must always be treated with the proper care.

Laminate.  For a “wood look” at a fraction of wood’s weight and price, laminate desks are often a great option.  They can be manufactured to look like many things, but are commonly printed with wood grains of various color and finish.  Laminate desks require much less maintenance and care than wooden ones do, and make a great all around choice for budget-conscious offices.

Metal.  Depending on the type and gauge of metal used, metal desks can be some of the most durable options around.  Whether they provide your office with the look and feel you desire is up to you—but for durability and strict utility, metal is the way to go.

Plastic.  Plastic desks are generally highly mobile, and not meant for solid, stationary everyday work.  However, if you are looking for a desk to take from site-to-site with you, they are often light, easy to manage, and highly affordable.  Check into these desks as temporary and mobile desk solutions.
