What filing cabinet materials are available?

Filing cabinets come in a variety of materials and looks.  Depending on your price range, your office design scheme, and your functional needs, one choice may be better for you than another.

Wood.  As with most furniture, wood gives filing cabinets a pleasing, high-quality look.  However, wooden filing cabinets often show wear easily and need frequent refinishing to maintain their finish.  They also add a lot of weight to an already unwieldy filing cabinet, which makes each cabinet even more difficult to move. 

Laminate.  Laminate filing cabinets are a popular choice because they can be made to resemble wood, at a fraction of the price and weight.  Laminate is often more durable than wood as well—although it depends on the quality of the laminate.  Laminate is the perfect choice for a budget conscious office that wants the high-quality look of wood with the practical attributes of a more durable material.

Metal.  Metal filing cabinets are a standby for any office wanting a durable, cost-effective means of storing their files.  Made in a variety of specifications—and a few different colors—metal filing cabinets are a great choice for budget-conscious offices or filing cabinets for storage.

Fire resistant.  Certain filing cabinets on the market have been tested as “fire resistant,” which means that the interior of the cabinet will remain at less than 350°F for one hour even in the middle of a 1700°F fire.  Some may even have the ability to protect media such as VHS, CD, and computer disks, which must be kept at 125°F to prevent damage.  These fire resistant filing cabinets can be useful, but are often less economical than a safe with the same characteristics.
